Tom Kilfoyle receives Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award

The roar of engines and the precision of performance at the National Championship Air Races are made possible not only by the pilots in the cockpit, but by the masterful hands and minds behind the scenes. This year, we proudly celebrate one of our own, Tom Kilfoyle, as the recipient of the prestigious Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award — one of the highest honors in aviation maintenance.

Named after Charles Taylor, the first aviation mechanic who built and maintained the Wright brothers’ engines, the Master Mechanic Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime of dedication, technical expertise, and professionalism in aircraft maintenance. The award is only given to those who have completed 50 or more years of excellence as a certified airframe and powerplant mechanic. It is not easily earned—and that’s exactly why Tom Kilfoyle’s recognition carries such weight.

For decades, Tom has been a cornerstone of the air racing world. Known for his deep mechanical knowledge, he has played a critical role in keeping aircraft not only competitive, but safe. In a sport where margins are razor-thin and reliability is everything, Tom’s work has helped countless teams push the limits with confidence.

From all of us at the National Championship Air Races, congratulations to Tom Kilfoyle on receiving the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. Your legacy continues to inspire, and your contributions help keep the spirit of air racing flying strong.
