| A view of Reno Stead Field, site of the Reno National Championship Air Races, from the Southeast. |
Stead Field was originally constructed as "Reno Army Airport" by the Reno Army Air Corps in 1942. It was renamed "Stead Army Airbase" in 1951 in honor of Croston Stead, who died in the crash of a P-51 Mustang during a mock dog fight.
Stead Army Airbase was scheduled for closure as a military facility in 1963. Ownership of the 5,000-acre site was transfered to the City of Reno in 1966, and it began operation as Reno Stead Airport in June of that year.
Between 1954 and 1964, as many as 80,000 Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force personnel from the United States and her allies were trained here in various combat, counter-insurgency, and desert survival techniques.
Although for the first two years air races in Reno were held at a dirt strip at nearby Sky Ranch, since 1966 Reno Stead Airport has been the site of the National Championship Air Races and Air Show. The Reno Air Racing Association maintains offices in a hangar at the West end of the field.
